It’s almost time for caucus!
But what is it? Why does it matter?
And how can you help?
So…what is caucus anyway?
Caucus is a meeting of Democrats in a district to select candidates to be on the primary ballot, among other things.
We want to get Alexis on the ballot at caucus, and you can help!
This year, the caucus process takes place virtually on March 7th and March 14th
What is "Caucus?"
This is the principal way we, as citizens, choose who will be on our primary ballot in June. It is an ESSENTIAL part of the process for any candidate’s prospects of being elected. And it is the time in the electoral process where your vote will have the single biggest impact - often more than 100-fold greater than on the primary ballot or general election ballot.
The 'Caucus Process' is actually multiple steps, see the table below for full details.
(Exact dates and other details vary by county - the info below is for Jefferson County, check here for other counties in Colorado.)
So what can I do?
You can do all these things today, all in under 5 minutes:
1) Check if you’re registered to vote as a Democrat (Do not skip this! Many people who think of themselves as Democrats are in fact registered as unaffiliated.) If you’re not registered as a democrat, do so now. The final deadline is Feb 13, but don’t delay!
2) Register for caucus. Put your address in the box on the right, partway down, and hit ‘submit.’ This will give you your precinct number and Zoom registration link, which you will then use to actually register. Deadline for this is technically the morning of caucus, but please complete this by March 6 at the very latest, to avoid the risk of not having your eligibility verified in time to participate.
- The registration form asks if you are interested in being a precinct organizer, county delegate, and state delegate. These questions are not official, so don’t stress about filling them out ‘right.’
3) Block your calendar!
- March 7, 9:30am-12:30pm. This one is absolutely essential; if you don’t go to caucus, you can’t participate in the rest of the process.
- March 14, 9:30am-1:30pm. This one is really important, and even more fun than caucus itself, but you can skip it if you went to caucus, were selected as a delegate, and then find a proxy to carry your vote for you at assembly.
4) Tell the local candidates you’re supporting (like me! - info@alexisforcolorado.com) that you’re registered and ready to go.
You will do these things on March 7 or later
5) Attend caucus. (You can do this on your own from anywhere; or bring your laptop and charger, and join fellow dems for coffee, snacks, and community. Final venue TBD - email info@alexisforcolorado.com if you want to make sure we keep you updated about this option.)
- Fill out the form during the meeting to be selected as a delegate for county assembly.
- Strongly consider becoming a ‘precinct organizer.’ It is a modest commitment, and a great way to help build the strength of our movement and our party, and have a voice in the party’s path going forward
6) Attend County Assembly (same as caucus - can zoom from anywhere, or join the crowd with Team Alexis)
- Vote for Dr Alexis for House District 23!
- Vote for delegates to the State Assembly, or become one yourself!
